”It is
never what you worry over that comes to pass in the end. The real catastrophes
are always different, unimagined, unprepared for, unknown…” (The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson
Walker). What if, instead of global warming or a shrinking ozone layer,
something totally unexpected happens? What if the rotation of earth starts to
slow down gradually? How would that affect people all over the world, people in
California and specifically eleven-year-old Julia?
In this
gripping and very well-written novel we get to follow Julia and her ways of
coping with parents, friends and her first love in the midst of this global
catastrophe. I liked this book so much I
couldn´t put it down.
Go here to watch Karen Walker introduce her novel. Now go to The slowing, a mock news site
which describes what happens all over the world as the earth’s rotation slows
down.
